The History of the Stations of the Cross

The practice of praying the Stations of the Cross dates back to the early Christians who would walk the actual streets of Jerusalem, retracing Jesus’ steps on the way to Calvary. Over time, as pilgrimage became difficult for most believers, the Franciscan friars developed the devotion as we know it today — bringing Jerusalem to every parish in the world. By the 18th century, the 14 stations had become a beloved tradition in Catholic churches everywhere. Today, walking the Way of the Cross is one of the most meaningful ways families can enter into the mystery of Christ’s Passion — whether at church, along an outdoor path, or right at home.

What Are the Stations of the Cross?

The Way of the Cross consists of 14 stations, each representing a moment in Jesus’ journey to the Cross. Traditionally, they are prayed in churches or along outdoor paths, but they can also be done at home as a family. Each station allows us to pause, reflect, and unite our hearts with Jesus’ suffering and love.

Here are the 14 Stations of the Cross:

  1. Jesus is condemned to death.
  2. Jesus carries His cross.
  3. Jesus falls the first time.
  4. Jesus meets His mother.
  5. Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus carry the cross.
  6. Veronica wipes the face of Jesus.
  7. Jesus falls the second time.
  8. Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem.
  9. Jesus falls the third time.
  10. Jesus is stripped of His garments.
  11. Jesus is nailed to the cross.
  12. Jesus dies on the cross.
  13. Jesus is taken down from the cross.
  14. Jesus is laid in the tomb.

Each station reminds us of Jesus’ love for us and His willingness to suffer for our salvation. It is a time to reflect on our own lives, our struggles, and how we can carry our own crosses with faith.

A Simple & Meaningful Way for Kids to Pray the Stations

The Stations of the Cross Coloring Printable makes this devotion more interactive for children. As they color each station, they can reflect on Jesus’ journey and what it means for them.

Here are some ways to use the printable:

  • Color one station per day, and pray together while coloring, making a short reflection for each station.
  • Encourage kids to tell the story in their own words as they go through the stations.

This activity helps children see that Jesus understands suffering, and that even in difficult times, we can trust in His love and mercy.
