The 10 Commandments Lesson + Free Printable

Moses and the Ten Commandments

Long ago, the people of Israel were enslaved in Egypt and cried out to God for help. God chose Moses to lead them to freedom and worked many miracles through him.

Moses guided the Israelites through their journey, showing them that God was always with them, caring for them, and leading them to the promised land. One day, Moses went up a mountain called Mount Sinai to talk to God. There, God gave him two stone tablets with the Ten Commandments. These commandments were not just rules, but ways for the people to love God and live together in peace.

Why Do We Need Rules?

Imagine playing soccer with no rules—everyone doing whatever they want. Or driving on roads with no signs or signals. Chaos, right?

Just like games need rules to be fun and roads need rules to be safe, our lives need guidance too! That’s why God gave us the Ten Commandments—not to limit us, but to help us live a good and joyful life. These commandments help us love God and treat others with kindness and respect.

The Ten Commandments

The Ten Commandments are divided into two parts:

  • The first three commandments teach us how to love and honor God.
  • The last seven commandments guide us on how to love and respect others.

I. Love God above all things.

II. Do not use God’s name in vain.

III. Keep the Lord’s Day holy.

IV. Honor your father and mother.

V. Do not kill.

VI. You shall not commit adultery.

VII. Do not steal.

VIII. Do not lie.

IX. Do not covet your neighbor’s spouse.

X. Do not covet your neighbor’s goods.

Reflection: Living the Commandments Daily

God’s commandments are not just words written on stone tablets long ago—they are a guide for how we live our lives today. When we choose to follow them, we grow closer to God and bring peace into our homes, schools, and communities.

Take a moment to reflect:

  • Which of the commandments do you find easy to follow? Which ones are more challenging?
  • How can you show love for God and others through your daily actions?
  • Can you think of a time when following a commandment brought you peace or joy?

Encourage children to discuss these questions and share their thoughts. This helps them see that God’s guidance is always relevant, leading us to a life full of love and grace.
