St. Valentine: Patron of Love and Friendship
St. Valentine is known as the patron saint of love, marriage, and friendship. Though much of his life remains a mystery, his story has inspired generations to celebrate faith-filled love and selflessness. His feast day (February 14th) is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the true meaning of love—not just romantic love, but the love we are called to show one another as Christians. To help children engage with his story, I’ve created a free St. Valentine coloring page that you can download and print!
Who Was St. Valentine?
St. Valentine was a priest in Rome during the 3rd century. At a time when Christians were being persecuted, he was known for his kindness and his commitment to the faith. According to tradition, he secretly performed Christian marriages for couples, despite the Roman emperor’s ban. Eventually, St. Valentine was arrested and martyred for his faith. His legacy lives on as a reminder of God’s love and the importance of showing love to others.

Reflection:
After reading, ask the children:
- What does it mean that “God is love”?
- How can we show love to our family, friends, and even people we don’t know well?
- What are some ways we can remind others that they are loved by God?
- Can you think of a time when someone showed you kindness? How did it make you feel?
St. Valentine’s Love in Action Activity
Since St. Valentine is known for his acts of love and kindness, encourage children to do a “Love in Action Challenge” throughout the week. How to do it:
- Create a “Love in Action” Chart – Write down simple acts of love and kindness children can do each day. Here are some ideas:
- Say a kind word to someone.
- Pray for a friend or family member.
- Help a sibling or classmate with something.
- Make a homemade Valentine’s card with a Bible verse about love.
- Thank God in prayer for the people who love you.
- Each time a child completes an act of kindness, they can color in a heart on the chart to track their progress.
- At the end of the week, talk about how these acts of love made them feel and remind them that love is not just about one day—it’s a way of living as followers of Christ!
