November 3: St. Martin de Porres + Free Printable

St. Martin de Porres: A Saint of Humility and Charity

St. Martin de Porres is known as the patron saint of social justice, barbers, and the poor. He dedicated his life to serving others, showing extraordinary love and kindness to the sick, the hungry, and even animals. His feast day (November 3rd) is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on his virtues of humility, generosity, and deep faith. To help children learn about his inspiring life, I’ve created a free St. Martin de Porres coloring page that you can download and print!

Who Was St. Martin de Porres?

St. Martin was born in Lima, Peru, in 1579. He was of mixed race, and because of this, he faced discrimination throughout his life. Despite these challenges, he chose to serve God with humility and love. He became a lay brother in the Dominican order and spent his days caring for the sick, feeding the hungry, and helping those in need. St. Martin was known for his deep prayer life, his special love for animals, and even for performing miracles, including healing the sick and multiplying food for the poor.

Did You Know?

Did you know that St. Martin de Porres is often shown with a broom? He believed that no act of service was too small, and he saw cleaning as a way to serve God just as much as prayer or caring for the sick. He reminds us that even the simplest tasks can be done with love for God and others.

Here you’ll find a video about St. Martin de Porres from the Christian Family TV YouTube channel:

Reflection:

After reading the passage, ask the children:

  • What does it mean to help “the least of these”?
  • How can we follow St. Martin’s example by helping others around us?
  • Why do you think St. Martin saw every small task as important?
  • How do you feel when you do something kind for someone else?
  • Can you think of one way you can show love to someone in need today?
