August 28: St. Augustine + Free Printable

St. Augustine: A Saint Who Found His Way Back to God

St. Augustine, one of the most influential figures in Christian history, is known as the patron saint of theologians, printers, and brewers. His powerful conversion story and deep writings continue to inspire people today. His feast day on August 28th is an excellent opportunity to reflect on his journey to faith and his profound contributions to the Church. To help children connect with his inspiring story, I’ve created a free St. Augustine coloring page that you can download and print!

Who Was St. Augustine?

St. Augustine was born in North Africa in 354 and lived a tumultuous early life, searching for meaning in all the wrong places. He explored worldly pleasures, sought knowledge in philosophy, and struggled with questions about God. But through the prayers of his mother, St. Monica, and the guidance of St. Ambrose, Augustine converted to Christianity at the age of 32.

He went on to become one of the Church’s greatest theologians, writing influential works such as Confessions and The City of God. His teachings about God’s grace, the nature of sin, and the role of the Church have had a lasting impact on Christian thought.

Here you’ll find a video about St. Augustine from the St. Mina and St. Marina Coptic Orthodox Church YouTube channel:

  • Reflection on Conversion: St. Augustine’s story is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to turn back to God. Encourage children to think about their own relationship with God and how they can always find their way back to Him, just like Augustine did.
  • Bible Study: Pair the coloring page with a reading on God’s grace and forgiveness to make learning more interactive.
    • Here’s a passage to read together: Luke 15:11-32 – The Parable of the Prodigal Son (Find reflection questions below the printable)

Did you know?

St. Augustine’s mother, St. Monica, prayed for her son’s conversion for 17 years! She never gave up on him, even when he was living a life far from God. St. Augustine himself later wrote in his Confessions that her persistent prayers played a key role in his eventual conversion to Christianity. This teaches us the power of prayer and how God answers in His perfect timing.

Reflection:

After reading, ask the children:

  1. What do you think St. Augustine felt when he turned back to God after so many years of searching?
  2. In the story of the Prodigal Son, what do we learn about God’s love and forgiveness?
  3. How do you think God welcomes us when we make mistakes and ask for forgiveness?
  4. What are some things we can do to get closer to God, just like St. Augustine did?
  5. How can we help others who may be feeling lost find their way back to God?
